Our Story
Sarah’s House was established in 2001 as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency care, shelter, food, clothing and other basic necessities to women and their children. These individuals have found themselves in the frightening position of having no safe place to sleep or eat and few options for immediate assistance available. Since its founding, Sarah’s House has provided real time help to many homeless, unemployed, or underemployed single women or women with children.
There is no situation more frightening, dangerous and seemingly hopeless for a woman than to be alone on the streets of a large metropolitan area with no place to go. The challenges facing a mother with children to care for is even direr.

Our History |
It was from a situation such as this that Sarah’s House was conceived. Kathleen Miller knew of a woman and her handicapped daughter seeking emergency shelter in the Pasadena, TX area with no success. After many fruitless attempts to secure assistance from other established organizations, the shelters’ founders Kathleen Miller and Nancy McGill, realized a need existed for women and their dependents. The mission for Sarah’s House was born…to provide emergency housing, stability, education, and counseling to homeless women, and reduce homelessness within the community.

In its early years as a charity, Sarah’s House had no facilities. Assistance was provided through relationships with local hotels and motels, restaurants, transportation services, day-care providers, etc. Financial donations from the community allowed Sarah’s House to compensate these supportive organizations for providing their services. A safe and secure facility that would meet all these needs was always a dream but seemed financially out of reach.
In 2005, Sarah’s House was able to realize its dream. An area organization had a facility that was perfectly suited to meet the needs of their clients. While the building required some modifications to meet housing regulations, this challenge was accepted with excitement and enthusiasm from the Board of Directors and the local community. Work on the building began and a scheduled opening to the public was planned for January 2006.
In August 2005, Sarah’s House was faced with a tremendous opportunity to help fellow citizens-Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Board voted to open five months early and do whatever necessary to provide assistance to the newly homeless neighbors from the affected areas.
In 2013 Sarah’s House was once again in need of a facility. With the building sold, staff and Board were faced with finding safe and stable housing for its residents. Sarah’s House was able to remain open due to the kindness of the Local Insulators Union 22, who allowed Sarah’s House to remain until a new facility was in hand.
In November 2015 Sarah’s House received its certificate of occupancy at a new location, 711 Perla Street, Pasadena, TX!
Thanks to a dedicated Board of Directors, committed paid staff and devoted community volunteers all work together to make a difference in the lives of homeless women and their children.
